Using Shortcut Keys

Instead of entering a full bookmark name, you can choose to use shortcut keys.

A shortcut key is a single keystroke that is passed as an argument to hlg to launch a bookmark.

There are two types of shortcuts in hlg namely:

  • Category shortcuts,[1] and

  • Global shortcuts.

To launch a bookmark with a category bookmark,

  1. Type hlg followed by the category name, a period and the key. For example, hlg electronics.c will launch a bookmark with the shortcut key c in the "electronics" category.

  2. If the category is set as the default category, just type hlg followed by the key like this:

    hlg c
  3. This will launch the bookmark assigned the key c to it.

  4. To launch a global shortcut key, you type hlg, then as its argument pass the key prefixed with the colon character like this:

    hlg :c
  5. Unlike category shortcut keys, global shortcut keys are unique throughout the bookmarks database. They are not bound by the category.

Whichever bookmark was allocated the key c in any category will be launched.

The advantage with global shortcut keys is that you do not care about which category holds a bookmark you want to visit:

  • You just type its key and the bookmark will be launched;

  • You type the global key as you assign it.
